UVM Sig Eps Suspended

I think the Sig Ep survey from UVM has been blown out of proportion. They made a crude and insensitive joke, but are only being targeted because they are a fraternity. The feminist group who has made this a national story is only exploiting these college students to bring a professor back on campus. True gender studies is not about protesting an asinine survey given to fraternity members. Although I think the fraternity should be more aware of what they say, and especially write and distribute , we have all said or done something crude and insensitive that has hurt someone in the past. I do believe this suspension is warranted, but becoming a national story has taken the issue too far. Was Delta Chi at Mississippi State a national story when they got kicked off campus? Or, more recently, did Kappa Sig peak the interest of campaigns such as M.A.D.D. or DARE for their suspension? No. This story reeks of activist propaganda, but that’s just my opinion.

Stephen Fry argues that the study of language should not be about what is right and what is wrong, but how to use it. His comparison of language to clothing is wonderful. He does this is such an effective way, interestingly, by using prescriptive grammar. Still worth the watch.
